FAQs

Our cod liver oil is not made in laboratories. It is batch brewed so each batch can have slightly different levels of vitamin A and D depending on the season and diet of the fish.

It’s important to note that vitamin D test results can vary between labs and even between tests. Vitamin D levels are notoriously difficult to measure and interpret.  We don’t have much faith we have in current vitamin D tests.

The most recent test results are: vitamin D ~400 IU/ml, vitamin A ~2000 IU/ml

  • In a 2.5 ml dose (1/2 teaspoon) = vitamin D ~1000 IU/ml, vitamin A ~5000 IU/ml
  • In a 5 ml dose (1 teaspoon) = vitamin D ~2000 IU/ml, vitamin A ~10000 IU/ml

Fermented cod liver oil is nature’s best source of vitamins A and D.

To the best of our knowledge, toxicity from cod liver oil has never been documented. Synthetic vitamin A and D on the other hand are toxic and cases of toxicity have been reported. If you’re looking at other brands please find out EXACTLY how they process their oil. Nature has provided natural cod liver as a safe vitamin A and D supplement without human interference.

Our recommended dosages are

  • Children under 12 years: 1/2 teaspoon or 2.5 mL
  • Children over 12 years and adults: 1 teaspoon (5ml)
  • Pregnant and nursing women: 1.5 teaspoons

Note that 2 capsules = 1 ml

Absolutely. In fact it’s essential.

  • Infants should receive at least 400 IU of vitamin D per day from all food sources to protect against overt vitamin D deficiency.
  • Infants can obtain vitamin D from breast milk, sunshine and supplements such as cod liver oil.
  • Breast milk can be a poor source of vitamin D or an excellent source of vitamin D, depending on the mother’s intake (mothers should supplement with vitamin D)
  • We would recommend using the children’s dosages guide on the bottle as a minimum.

Here’s a chart showing the roles how growing bodies use vitamins A, D, and K (which are in high levels in Green Pasture cod liver oil):

Cod liver oil is essential for mother and baby’s health. Pregnant women using cod liver oil have infants with a lower risk for juvenile type 1 diabetes. Cod liver oil taken by nursing mothers improves the fatty acid profile in breast milk to promote optimal brain development and also increases levels of vitamin A to prevent infections. Pregnant women may wish to consult their health practitioner about taking cod liver oil during pregnancy

Also see the question about storage above. Green Pasture fermented cod liver oil very thick and more stable than lower lighter grade cod liver used by other companies. Remember that this is fermented cod liver oil – so rancidity isn’t a problem. Green Pasture fermented oils are not mass produced with high heat like other cod liver oils. Every batch is tested for purity and active ingredients with great results.

Make sure you keep your oil in a cool dark cool place out of direct sunlight. It isn’t necessary to store your oils in the fridge unless you have opened your bottle and are not intending to use it for months. Storing your oils in the fridge can make them go solid and more difficult to dish out.

The cod used to make Green Pasture products is fished from the Arctic Ocean which is known to have low levels of pollution. All products are tested according to protocols of the Association of Analytical Communities (AOAC) and approved free of detectable levels of 32 contaminants. We guarantee this product to be free of contaminants including mercury. Furthermore, mercury is water soluble. It may be present in the flesh of fish, but not present in the oil (yet another advantage of using liver oil). See this short video explaining the testing protocols used

  1. Hi, can you please give me some info regarding the taste? I find fishy tasting things very difficult to take, reflux etc. Also am concerned if my children will stomach them. Is it possible to purchase samples of a few of each of the flavours before committing to a large jar? Thank you very much
    Kind regards, Katherine

  2. hi guys just bought a sample. I’m really after a good quality omega 3. I’m too afraid fishoil is rancid. How does your fermented cod oil place with bioavailabity of omega 3?

    1. Dave Liow

Hi Sarah. Fermented cod liver oil is about 15% omega 3 oils – so a 5ml dose would give you around 750mg or omega 3s. Omega 3s don’t like heat or chemicals – and the processing of our oils doesn’t use either process, so the oils are unspoiled.
